The Sixth Judicial Circuit, Civil Law Court “B” has finally granted the divorce of Mai Bright Urey from top Liberian politician Benoni W. Urey.
The dissolution of the Ureys’ matrimony was done on August 4, 2022, according to a senior court officer.
Before the action of divorce for Incompatibility of Temper, plaintiff (Mai) and defendant had been lawfully married since May 25, 1986. They had lived together and cohabited as husband and wife in tolerance for 36 unbroken years, Mai’s lawyer, Atty. Mmonbeydo Joah said in his May 30, 2022, action he filed before the court.
But in 2019, according to court document, Mai Bright Urey and Benoni W. Urey realized that they could no longer live in peace and all efforts made to have defendant (Benoni) and plaintiff (Mai) live in peace was to no avail up to the time she filed for divorce with the court.
Mai had prayed the court to grant her a decree dissolving the marriage as if she and her former husband were two separate and distinct persons, as if such said marriage contract was never entered into.
She also asked the court to grant unto her “all further relief that the judge may deem just, legal, and equitable under the law.”
According to another senior court officer, Mr. Urey, the Political Leader of the All-Liberian Party (ALP), didn’t interpose any objection to his former wife’s wishes to end their 36-long years of being together as husband and wife.
Throughout their 36 years, they were blessed with three wonderful and beautiful daughters, Danielle Urey, who is now the head of MTN Liberia; Telia Urey, an enterprising business woman; and Benita Urey.
The former Mrs. Urey is a staunch member of the Roman Catholic Church in Liberia. The Church doesn’t easily honor or grant divorce to its member accept when its member’s life is in danger.
A senior officer in the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “But it is really going to be hard for the Church to honor such divorce after 36 years in the marriage looking at the reason why she requested the court to grant her to leave Mr. Urey.
